A Guide to FENSA Certification: What it Means

If you’re thinking about replacing or installing new box sash windows in your home, you’ve likely come across the term “FENSA certification”. But with the market for windows and doors at peak saturation, it’s important to ensure that the installer you work with will do a good job.

So what exactly is FENSA, and why should it matter to you as a homeowner?

What is FENSA?

FENSA – Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme – is a government-authorised scheme set up in 2002 by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF). Its purpose is to ensure that replacement windows and doors installed in dwellings in England and Wales comply with building regulations. Only FENSA-approved installers like Woodcock Sash Windows can issue a FENSA certificate.

At its core, FENSA exists to protect homeowners from poor workmanship and to guarantee compliance with current regulations around energy efficiency, ventilation, and safety.

Why is FENSA Certification important?

1. Compliance with building regulations

When you have windows or doors replaced, they must meet current building regulations. A FENSA-registered installer can self-certify that the work complies, saving you the hassle of applying for approval from your local authority.

2. Proof of quality installation

A FENSA certificate confirms that your new box sash windows have been installed professionally and meet the required standards. It’s an assurance that the work was carried out competently by a qualified installer.

3. Easier home selling process

If you decide to sell your property, a FENSA certificate provides official proof to prospective buyers and solicitors that your replacement windows comply with regulations. It’s a standard part of the documentation expected during the conveyancing process.

4. Peace of mind

Using a FENSA-registered company means your installation is backed by insurance, and you’ll have access to a complaints procedure should any issues arise. It’s a safety net that gives you added confidence in your investment.

What does a FENSA Certificate cover?

A FENSA certificate applies to replacement windows and doors installed in existing homes, not new builds or conservatories. It confirms:

  • The installation complies with building regulations.
  • The work has been registered with the local council.
  • The installer is competent and registered with FENSA.

However, it does not cover:

  • Repairs to existing windows (e.g. replacing glass only).
  • New installations in extensions or new build properties.
  • Conservatories, porches, or commercial premises.

FENSA Frequently Asked Questions

Is a FENSA certificate a legal requirement?

It is a legal requirement for all replacement windows and doors to be compliant with building regulations. Any installations made since April 2002 have needed either a valid FENSA certificate or a building regulations certificate.

How long does a FENSA certificate last?

A FENSA certificate lasts as long as the doors and windows it covers – so it stays with a property, not a person. It also gives you an insurance-backed guarantee, typically lasting 10 years.

Do you need a FENSA certificate to sell a house?

Yes – before you sell a house, you either need a FENSA certificate or a building regulations certificate to verify that your doors and windows are compliant with building regulations.

Can a FENSA certificate be issued retrospectively?

Yes, you can get FENSA approval retrospectively if you had replacement windows and doors installed but weren’t issued a FENSA certificate. You will need a Retrospective Building Regulation Compliance Certificate from your local authority. This can take time and costs between £300 – £400.
