What is Accoya Wood?
Accoya wood is a premium, sustainably sourced timber that offers exceptional durability and stability, making it the superior material for Box Sash Windows.
With its ability to resist swelling, shrinking, and warping, Accoya ensures that your windows maintain their structure and smooth operation throughout changing weather conditions. Accoya is not only environmentally friendly but also incredibly long-lasting, offering up to 50 years of reliable performance.
K Glass Glazing
Alongside Accoya timber for our window frames, we use K Glass for our glazing. K Glass is a high-performance, low-emissivity glass designed to boost the energy efficiency of your windows.
Its special coating reflects heat back into your home, helping to keep your living spaces warmer in winter and cooler in summer while allowing ample natural light to enter. Perfect for double or triple glazing, its energy-saving properties make it an excellent choice for homeowners who want to improve thermal insulation without sacrificing style.
Origins of Accoya Wood
Accoya begins life as radiata pine, also known as insignis pine or Monterey pine. Its scientific name is Pinus radiata. Although native to parts of Mexico and California, today it is primarily grown in sustainable plantations in New Zealand, Australia, and Chile.
The use of plantation grown timber is important. Radiata pine grows quickly and can be replanted efficiently, making it a renewable and responsibly managed resource.
Once harvested, the raw timber is transported to production facilities in the Netherlands. There, it undergoes a process called acetylation.
What is Acetylation?
Acetylation is a modification process that alters the wood at a cellular level. Rather than applying a surface treatment, the structure of the timber itself is changed. During this process:
- The wood is treated with acetic anhydride.
- The cell walls are permanently modified.
- The timber becomes far less able to absorb water.
- Stability and durability are significantly enhanced.
Crucially, no toxic chemicals remain in the finished product. The process does not coat the wood – it transforms it from within.
Why Does Acetylation Make a Difference?
Acetylation alters the performance of timber by significantly reducing its ability to absorb moisture.
While untreated softwood naturally swells in damp conditions and shrinks as it dries, leading to distortion, cracking and rot over time, Accoya remains exceptionally stable with up to 75% less movement.
It also offers excellent paint adhesion and Class 1 durability, providing outstanding resistance to rot. This enhanced stability is particularly important for sash windows, helping them to operate smoothly within their frames throughout the year while maintaining their appearance and performance for decades.
